About Luben, his Family and his Friends The Foundry Complex, Where the Sculpture is made
INTRODUCTION I believe that great art is a reflection of the personality of the artist and the culture and the environment of the place where the art is created. Well researched books about artists, from earlier times, do more than print a lot of reproductions of their paintings or sculpture. The text is skillfully composed to give the reader an idea of forces that inspired or constrained the heart and the hand of the artist. This is how books, devoted to the life and works of famous and usually dead artists, are designed. In this site I attempt to tell the story of a remarkable young sculptor, Luben Boykov. Luben is not yet famous and not yet dead. So this site, like Luben's life and artistic career, is a work in progress. It has been 9 years since I met him, soon after he came to Canada. Starting with nothing but his artistic talents and his forceful personality he has made remarkable artistic and material progress. My purpose is to follow and document the trajectory of Luben's career for as long as I am able. When I first started this project, two years ago, my approach was encyclopedic, photograph and present every sculpture that Luben created. Now the shear volume of his work has made this impossible. The work illustrated here represents Luben's artistic and spiritual focus, they are some of the sculptures that he is most pleased with at this stage in his development. Over time I will introduce different images as new sculpture and photographs become available.
ABOUT THE SITE DESIGN this site was created by John W. Evans It is standard practice in web site design to keep graphics few and small. The reason is that large graphics files take time to download and web surfers don't like to be kept waiting. Unfortunately in a web site devoted to visual arts this seriously compromises the aesthetics and usefulness of the site. I hope that art lovers will take the time to appreciate the sculpture and the information presented here. The site is optimized for Netscape v4+ and Internet Explorer v4+ and is designed for best viewing on a 640 x 480 pixel screen. We have included some QTVR (QuickTime Virtual Reality) movies. These are panoramas and objects which show the environment and the sculpture very well. For more information on where these movies are located and how they were made see the QTVR page. If you have any trouble viewing the site please E-mail me at - jwevans@thezone.net To contact Luben phone (709) 754 0561, or fax or home phone (709) 335 8245,
